Chapter 9
Summary:
Lenina was so disgusted by everything that she saw on the reservation that she thought she needed a holiday. She took six half-gramme tablets of soma and would be out for at least 18 hours. Bernard decided to go to Santa Fe to contact Mustapha Mond. Mond is curious about the two individuals and tells Bernard to bring them back with him and Lenina. Mustapha sends word to the Warden of the Reservation. Bernard then treats himself to a bath, vibro-vac massage, an electrolytic shave, and lucheon. At 2:30 he heads back to Malpais.
John shows up and Bernard and Lenina's house and thinks there is no one there. He sat down on the steps and cried. After a half an hour, he thought to look in the window. He sees a green suitcase and breaks the window. It is Lenina's suitcase and he opens it and starts to smell all her things, taking in her scent. He started playing with the zippers on her clothes. He walked up to the sleeping Lenina and stares at her. He reached for her zipper and quickly unzipped it. He shut his eyes because what he was doing was wrong.Then John hears Bernard's helicopter.

Importance:
Mustapha Mond wants use Linda and John as examples of why it is important to stay in the New World, as a way of control. Bernard is going to use Linda and John as blackmail to be able to keep him job.
We learn a little bit more about Bernard's character. When Helmholtz tells him that he is going to be laid off, he freaks out. He then devises this plan to keep his job.
