What would you do if you had the choice to kill one person or kill eight including yourself? Most would rather kill one if it meant staying alive. In Barton of Cold Equations case, he had to decide if one girl's life was worth the lives of six dying people.
In Cold Equations, Barton is on his way to Woden when he discovers a stowaway on board the EDS. It's the law that any stowaway found is to be jettisoned into space immediately . Barton is baffled when the stowaway turns out to be a girl. He has to decide if one naive girl's life is worth more than six fever stricken men. His commander tells him that he has to kick her off the ship. Barton then makes the tough decision to jettison the poor girl into space.
If I were in Barton's shoes, I would have done the same thing. It's a hard decision to take someone's life, especially someone who didn't think they were doing anything wrong. I can't imagine what Barton had to have been thinking when he made the decision to kill the girl. It was the right thing to do though. One life gone is better than eight.
