• He was made fun of as a kid. 
• He doesn't have a very good relationship with Linda. She was never conditioned to be a mother.

• In her old society they didn't have mothers. She considers giving birth to John disgusting and being called mother reminds her of it.

• They are outsiders. Nobody like Linda because she sleeps with all the men. They don't like John because he is associated with Linda.
