Words of the Day

Subliminal- adj.
Mr. Fielding sent subliminal messages to his students: "Do your homework."
       He sent  subliminal messages to his mom: "I want a pony!"

Regressive- adj.
He has regressive manners: he eats with his fingers and blows his nose with his shirt sleeve.
        He has regressive manners: he blew bubbles in his milk and tried to eat with his elbows.

 Hindrance- n.
He is a hindrance to his class.
     He is a hindrance to the team.

Vigilance- n.
Mr. Fielding's vigilance in checking homework lead some students to failure.
     The superhero's vigilance in looking for villians lead to over flowing jails.

Undulate- v.
The heat wave undulated like an ocean.
The monkey undulated like the wave that swept away all his bananas.

Consternation- n.
The woman cried in consternation when her plane was cancelled.
The woman showed her consternation by hyperventilating when the taxi drove past her.

Vague- n.
His memories of last Wednesday were vague. (Due to his not sleeping for 48 hours while he studied for vocabulary.)
Her memories of her first school dance were vague due to the large amount of alcohol she consumed that afternoon.

 Resilient- adj.
The town was resilient after the devastating earthquake.
Jackson was resilient in how he continued to go to work even after his cat died.

Intermittent- adj.
The intermittent clock had to be replaced because the second hand was too fast. 


Luminous- adj.
The luminous moon was visible on the dark winter night.

Vocabulary-Aug. 30th

  1. Subliminal- adj. existing or operating below the threshold of consciousness
  2. Regressive- adj. obtained from or characterized by backward reasoning
  3. Hindrance- n. a stop or something that slows/prevents a process
  4. Vigilance- n. the quality or state of being wakeful and alert
  5. Undulate- vb. to move very wave-like or to bend with curves in each direction
  6. Consternation- n. a sudden, alarming amazement or dread that results in utter confusion; dismay
  7. Vague- adj. not clearly or explicitly stated or expressed
  8. Resilient- adj. easily recovering from a usually bad event
  9. Intermittent- adj. stopping or ceasing for a time; alternately ceasing and beginning again
  10. Luminous-adj. radiating or reflecting light; shining; bright.
